Use Some Elbow Grease was basically about how it pays off to work hard. It points out that though in today’s world people get famous for just being famous, in the real world you have to put in the hours in order to reap the rewards. In most fields, you have to work your way up the totem pole; you start on the bottom rung of the ladder. Christy then lists some ways for readers to make sure that they get fired, such as showing up late consistently, and at all, leave early, smoke/drink while working, and dress like a skank, to name a few. She also lists some problems that might arise when meshing your previous lifestyle with your new working-girl one, like your 2 AM food runs when you have a 6 AM alarm, and suggests that, though it might seem like an 80-year-old woman thing to do, you start getting to bed earlier and halting your late night activities for a while. It may seem tedious and no fun, but when you finally reach the top of the ladder you will be glad you did.
The author also discusses not becoming a victim of circumstance. Lots of hard-working women in the world started out in near-poverty or trashy neighborhoods. But they worked hard and overcame diversity in order to reach their goals of getting to the top.
In order to get to the top, Christy offers up some tips: be on time, which probably means being at least ten minutes early. That way you are always early or you have some wiggle room if something goes wrong. Dress professionally and being well-spoken are also mentioned. Manners and courtesy are also factors that some times go unnoticed, but always pay off in the long run.

I thought this chapter was good. And I agree with it. The only problem I had with it is that I feel like some of its contents are common sense. Maybe that was because I was raised in a upper middle-class home with good morals. But I feel like it’s pretty widely known that showing up to work late all the time will end up getting you fired.
But that could also be why in the chapter the author mentions people who were born with a silver spoon in their mouth. Some people may have been handed everything and just expect to get away with whatever. And sometimes they might get hired for a job that I deserve. That’s probably where the politeness and niceness come into play.
Something I have always realized but never really thought about is the ten minutes thing. I am almost always early to appointments (except for my 8 AM class), but I could definitely use some wiggle room. Making sure I have ten extra minutes is a great idea, and would definitely make me feel a lot less rushed or stressed in the morning, or in the afternoon, even.
All in all I think the idea of the chapter was that hard work pays off. It may take a while and it may not be fun, but in the end it is worth it. And that is always good to know :)
“Words Words Words” was about how we live in a world where we have gone from Jane Austen’s to Paris Hilton’s; “In vain I have struggled this will not do, allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.” to “OMG. That’s hot.”
It also reminds us how people are always listening to us, whether we know it or not: your boss might hear your recount of your crazy weekend, or the kids you babysit might overhear you dropping some f-bombs on the phone with your friends.
Christy points out that a big factor in our lack of verbal skills is because of television; it is basically rotting out all of our brains, especially with shows like Laguna Beach and Jersey Shore. She offers up suggestions for what you could do while watching TV or in lieu of it.
One of the most encouraged suggestions is to simply pick up a book. Not only will you probably enjoy yourself, more than likely it will educate you 10 times more than an hour of TV would. You could learn new words or learn something new about a subject that you were once unaware of.
Another big suggestion is learning a new language; Audrey knew five! There are many different ways in going about learning a foreign language, but with all that time you are saving by not watching TV, you could definitely acquire a new oral skill.
Basically the point of the chapter is for women to educate themselves so that they sound like intelligent, well-rounded, well-read, and well-spoken young ladies, instead of, like, a college sorority girl from 90s movies.

Once again, for the most part I totally agree with this chapter. In today’s world, women that are the most highly regarded within society as a whole are ones who are not particularly intelligent, or who at least do not portrayed as such. Kind of like in Chapter 1, those kinds of women make it look like you have to act like a total buffoon to get any sort of attention.
I also agree that reading is a great alternative to almost anything. I love to read. I’m not a genius, but reading has been a huge factor in my intellect, and I can say from experience that those who are not very well-read are more likely than not in the lower half of the intelligence quotient.
However, I don’t think that you have to shut yourself off from technology, namely television, and be an avid watcher/reader of the news to be an intelligent young woman. Those things are good ideas, but you can read books or magazines or newspapers and still be smart. Watching Grey’s Anatomy every week isn’t going to make you a less intelligent person.
If you chose to do other things in that hour time slot of Grey’s would you benefit from them? Absolutely. But if you choose to indulge in Grey’s you aren’t a dummy. You still have skills and talents.
I also don’t totally agree that women who are promoted in our society for the most part are idiots. Yeah, Paris Hilton isn’t exactly a model classy lady. But there are plenty of famous starlets who are.
As of late, Kate Middleton has been at the center of attention amongst media outlets and she is the definition of classy. In fact, she was ranked the most well-mannered celebrity of the year. Keira Knightly is a brilliant actress who always seems to be behaving well and acting appropriately. There are several others, but those are some I just thought of off the top of my head.
Then there’s always women political figures. Michelle Obama is very poise and intelligent, and so was Laura Bush. Most First Ladies are.
But, overall, I do have to concur that lots of women today are lacking in the oral/verbal skills department as a result of a society who doesn’t promote their importance by allowing things like “OMG. That’s hot.” to become such phenomena.
Just kidding. But I am interrupting the current flow of Classy Lady blogs.
It’s Christmas Break, so I will be diving back into Hepburn’s and Hilton’s very soon, but since it is 4:45 AM and I’ve been having a huge spiritual struggle the last, oh, 2 years or so, I’m going to go through my favorite Bible and blog the notes that I wrote in it and verses that I have underlined. I’m hoping that this is a step in the right direction for me spiritually because I am exhausted from going back and forth and up and down in my walk. I can’t do any of this alone, I know, but every time I start to get started something comes up. And then something else, etc. But since I have realized this and how big of an issue it is, and since I have realized that I can stay up til 3 AM social networking and looking at lolcatz, I think that I can spend some time in the word, even if it ends up only being 7 minutes. It’s a start.

I love this Bible because there is room in all the margins to take notes; that’s their whole purpose!
It also reminds me of a time when I was so on fire for Christ and it gives me hope.
I’m really hoping and praying that this is a step in the right direction.

If I just spent 7 minutes with Jesus, this would be 13 days worth of stuff; that’s almost 2 weeks!!

I feel like today’s gonna be a good day :)
So Chapter 1 is titled “Keep Your Chin Up and Your Skirt Down” which I pretty much think speaks for itself.
The author spends the greater half of the chapter talking about how girls show off too much of their bodies in order to get attention from people, mainly guys, but how “leaving something to the imagination” is a much better way to get someone’s attention and shows self respect. Christy places huge importance on self respect and continues to talk about ways that women do and do not respect themselves; she even inserts a mini quiz to test the reader’s self respect.
Then she goes on to talk about ways that we can show the world that we respect ourselves, like dressing like a professional and not a skank, not getting drinks or drinking very little, having good posture, and maintaining eye contact.
All together, Christy says, these things will definitely attract a guy’s attention. While most women think that low cut tops and constant chatting get a guy to notice them, she reveals that, surprisingly, most men are looking for that girl to bring home to mom, not one who looks like a slut and is super clingy. But the ones that do, aren’t worth your time.
She concludes the chapter by saying that self respect is the biggest hurdle to cross, but it is the biggest factor in determining a Hepburn from a Hilton. But once you get it, people will notice something different about you.

For the most part, I liked this chapter. I completely understand being one of the girls who notice that all the guys seem to be going for the fuller-figured, super flirtatious girls who throw themselves at guys and wear kind of questionable clothes. I’m no saint but I know I don’t behave that way, and I always have gotten frustrated because I refuse to lower my standards to get someone, but since I haven’t had a relationship in almost 4 years, it doesn’t seem to be working for me. But there is always room for improvement! I could definitely use a little more self respect, and I could be a little less clingy.
The thing that bothered me was the drinking. Just because I like to drink doesn’t make me less classy. Yes, getting drunk every weekend isn’t exactly the epitome of class, but having more than one drink when you’re out doesn’t automatically make you classless. I guess in moderation it is okay, or it just depends on how you handle yourself.
I think really though, the whole idea of this chapter is that a woman should behave in such a way that when put in a situation, like a job interview or meeting the parents, she is able to handle it with ease and poise, instead of having to change personas and feel nervous and uncomfortable. And I think that’s a pretty honorable thing.
School’s starting back this week…and I have a scholarship audition Sunday, juries and finals next week, and then more finals the next week. I will try to make time to read and post. If not, I will definitely make up for it over the holiday!

The first book I will be discussing is, as you can see, How to be a Hepburn in a Hilton World: The Art of Living with Style, Class, and Grace.
Oddly enough, I saw one of my friends jokingly post this book on the wall of one of her friends. I was actually intrigued by it, so I bought it for my Android in the Google Bookstore and so I also have access to it on my laptop, which I really enjoy. :)
Anyway.
This first post is going to be my summary and thoughts on the Introduction.

Essentially, the introduction is about what the societal norm has become in regards to women’s attitudes, values, and dress. Christy describes the “current female landscape” as “embarrassing, flippant, and shallow.” Throughout the chapter, she refers to the women who created and uphold these standards as the “stupid girls.” The author goes on to discuss how most of us know at least one or two “stupid girls” but even if we don’t, we see them all over television. Scandals and sex sell, so women have begun to give up every shred of dignity and self-respect they possess in order to be the center of, or simply receive any, attention. Needless to say, Christy thinks this style of living is stupid. Instead of getting and education or volunteering or simply acting classy, women/girls today are “too busy shaking their badonkadonks in short-lived music videos and diligently bedazzling their cell phones with more pink rhinestones.” She goes on to talk about her first experience with “stupid girls” throughout her life, and instances where you can choose to be classy or classless. She then talks about how “stupid girls” are a dime a dozen, and a woman with class is so hard to find. She challenges readers to dive into the book and rediscover the class and dignity we used to find in women like Jackie O., Audrey Hepburn, and Mother Teresa.
“I’m convinced that our new classy standards can raise the cultural bar and turn more heads than the Stupids’ exposed bra straps. I am positive that our hard work and long hours can put to shame the popular purse-dog-shopping-and-sweatsuit-wearing. And I know that our witty, well-informed words can speak louder than the Stupids’ collective strain of “OMG!” We do live in a different world from Audrey’s time of pearls, full skirts, and record players, but I don’t doubt that we can put style, class, and grace back on the map again. We can be Hepburns… even in a Hilton world!”

I think I am going to love this book. I really do. While I am no where near the epitome of class, I have always been disgusted and bothered by society’s ever-changing idea of what women should look/act like. I think short shorts and low cut tops are not the best choices. I think acting like a skank to get what you want is totally wrong. So I really agree with most, if not all, of the things Christy says about women in today’s world.
I also think that a lot of the things she says about what women should be, and how they used to be, is the type of woman described in Proverbs 31 and throughout the Bible; it’s the Godly woman many females aspire to be. I don’t think the author will be quoting any scripture, but if I see any parallels, you can bet that I will put it in here. :)
I think her choices of examples of women are tip-top as well. Jackie O. and Audrey Hepburn are renowned for their elegance, class, and grace. Mother Teresa is famous for her class and humility (among other things!). When I look at those women, I am in awe, and I think many other females in the world could say the same.
But what are people like Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton famous for? Sex tapes and being famous. Lindsay Lohan? Drugs, alcohol, and partying. I don’t know any of those women, so I really can’t say anything about them. But I do know that they are plastered all over the news and media outlets; they’re all people see or read about. That’s what the media is telling us is cool and acceptable. But that shouldn’t be the case. We should be promoting women (and men) who are doing things to better themselves or their communities or even the world. The best that we have are women who are totally crazy, like Sarah Palin, an ignorant political figure or Angelina Jolie, a humanitarian who stole another woman’s husband.
I was going to go on about women who do great things that never get noticed, but I even don’t know any! What a warped world! Luckily, Christy mentions some in the intro.
I can’t wait to dive deeper into this book. I think it’s going to be a great read and I would recommend all women/young ladies open it up and give it a try :)

Hey. It’s me. wecoulddbeheroes.tumblr.com. But I decided to create another tumblr just so I could discuss books that I’m reading and ONLY books that I’m reading, without having to worry about posts in-between them and all that. Not that it matters cause no one reads my tumblr anyway.
So. Yeah. If anyone reads this, I hope you enjoy! And maybe it will inspire you to pick up one of the books I’m reading and look at it yourself! Or read along with me! I probably won’t do more than a chapter a day!
